A new computer means Vista; Vista = no PM!

I'm a home user of PM. I've used it since version 2.0- or 1987, whichever came first! I never had any training, just some help from someone who had. Consequently, I've learned to use it intuitively. I have Version 7 on my computer, which I'm going to replace soon. Unfortunately, the new computer will come with Microsoft Vista, which is incompatable with PM. I can't use Publisher because I need to work with a commercial printer who prints a monthly newsletter I publish. I've looked at InDesign, but I think it's got more features than I need. The good thing is I can use my PM files with InDesign. The bad news is it's pricy! Suggestions?

Upgrades from PM6.5 or 7 to Indesign3 are still available at a huge discount (around 70%). Alternatively, zap the hard drive and install WinXP (making sure you have the required drivers first). Iechyd da! John 08:59 22/09/2008 BST

I have been using PM7 with Vista ever since it came out, and even before that using Vista Betas with no problems that I can remember, I tried Indesign and I don't like it. Doug

Like many others I looked at In Design but it is really overkill. I use Pagemaker for producing Stamp Albums for my collection and I have a workaround for now. I have an older computer with WindowsXP so I installed Pagemaker there and I use it by remote communication from my Vista computer. It works great but I have to fool with printer connections etc. I also have Virtual PC installed on my Vista Computer with Pagemaker running in Windows 2000. Problem here is that I cannot get my virtual PC to communicate with the Printer. I think it was a crappy move by Adobe to abandon an application just because it was older and especially since it doesn't work in the latest greatest from Microsoft.

The thing is Doug, InDesign can be as simple or complex as you wish. I started using InDesign from CS (ver 3). As a former PageMaker user, I found it pretty straightforward to use. Use it like PM by all means and then use all the special effects when needed. Ian

Strangely enough, I have just bought a Sony Viao VGN NR38 laptop with Windows Vista SP1 installed, and I installed my PageMaker 7.01a perfectly - and am using with (so far) no problems! Is this unusual? The only thing missing is that the Help topics do not run, but I have got round that by creating a short-cut to the c01bc.htm file.

Actually I have found a problem - spell check does NOT work with PM7 on my Vista laptop. A small matter perhaps, but annoying. The dictionary did not seem to install. Perhaps I need to do a re-install? Any ideas?

PM 7, does work with Win XP. I used PM 7 under XP Home and Pro - no probs. PM 6.5 is hit and miss from what I've heard. All prior versions....no idea! InDesign, and even PagePlus would be a better bet than PM as it is no longer being developed. Ian

You may get PM7 to install and run, but you're sitting on a time bomb. * John Davies, "7.9 - PageMaker and Microsoft Windows Vista" #1, 20 Mar 2007 6:31 pm </webx?14@@.3bc375a1/0> Upgrade to InDesign using your PM Licence to qualify for a big discount. * John Davies, "Moving on to InDesign" #1, 24 Jan 2006 3:03 pm </webx?14@@.3bbe32cb/0> You may think it has more features than you need, but what it does is have all the features PM is lacking - e.g. OpenType support, text on a curve, easy table creation, better image handling, better text importing, superb PDF creation, &c. &c. You will not regret the change. Iechyd da! John 14:13 12/12/2008 GMT

I am a retired home computer user. I have used PageMaker since it first came out. I love it! I am currently using v 7.02. I know the program very well and am very comfortable with it. I do not want to upgrade to InDesign and learn a new program, nor can I justify paying the upgrade price when what I have is working perfectly well for me. My problem: I cannot open the PM 7.02 files I created before getting a new computer with Vista on it 1 1/2 years ago. I need these older files. Any suggestions on how to get around this?? Suzanne - Have you given any thought to using a Virtual Computer? I don't quite understand it, but do a Google. From what I have read and understand, you can use a virtual computer to solve just the problem you are having. Worth a shot. Carole

But it's not working perfectly, is it, or you would be able to open those files. Learning ID is straightforward for a PM user - although ID has more advanced features, you don't need to be expert in all of them to successfully switch from PM. I never understand people who don't want to learn a new, better, program.

Not only that, but InDesign can be used in a similar fashion to PM, albeit with more advanced features. The learning curve is there. However, it's not as steep as some may think. Ian

Just as an update, I was able to retrieve all the old PM6.5 files I needed by using a friend's XP system with Pagemaker loaded. All of my files are on an external USB drive so hooked it up to his computer, opened each file, copied and pasted into Word docs and resaved. Took about three hrs but well worth the time as I was able to save all the song lyrics as well as all my personal stuff that was in PM6.5 format.

I need some advice and I am desperate. I just got a new laptop with Vista and I tried loading my pagemaker 6.5 program and it will not install, had the same problem with adobe photoshop 4.0. These two programs are what I use to do a town newsletter and although I still have them running on my old desktop, I need to be mobile and wanted to work on the files on my laptop. If anyone knows what I can do to get these programs to run in Vista please email as soon as you can at pdq427@earhtlink.net thanks Phyl Q

I think the best answer will be to upgrade to at least InDesign CS4 as well as Photoshop CS4. PM 6.5 had issues for some on XP, let alone Vista! Even PM 7.0 is not recommended on Vista. And this is the 32 bit versions! Ian

Vista wont run some programs or printers, that why it on its way out. I stayed with XP and Pagemaker 7 runs fine all the way through SP3. I find that PM7 also runs fine on Windows 7 beta. I do a 240 page catalog about 4 times a year and share PM7 files off a server and have no problems in producing 60 catalogs over 15 years. Convert to Creo PDF, upload to the commercial printer 350 miles away and Im done. With over 4000 PM7 files, Im not converting any time soon. Besides, IDCS4 doesnt convert PM7 files well. There is a lot of fudging that takes place. I have experimented with it and its ok but a bit of overkill for me.

> Vista wont run some programs or printers, that why it on its way out. It's on its way out because something better is coming along. There are people running Vista and Pagemaker but they're not going to get any support for it any more than they will when Windows 7 comes along. Bob

Also remember that Win 7 is BASED on Vista. Any software or hardware that was problematic on Vista will not magically run on Win 7. Win 7 will / can use the same drivers as Vista. Ian

Its also possible for PM7 (and many other programs)to run better. If not, I'll just keep it on an XP machine, not a problem. MS didnt want Vista to run anything lower than 16 bit (among other things) which shut many people out. Well, some folks didnt like that much. Win 7 is very fast, even on a single processor PC with 1GB RAM. A friend of mine who writes conduit language that talks to 140 operating systems also sees positive things about Windows 7 (so far). I'll wait and see.
