I work for the the commerical printing division of a newspaper and we receive a lot of outside files from various sources that represent the entire spectrum of skill levels.

We run Mac OS 10.4 on a PowerMac G5, printing to several RIPs running Graphics RIP v5.5 to 7.0. We primarily use a PDF workflow, using InDesign CS2 as an imposition template.

We have been experiencing an odd problem since our move to OSX.

On occasiuon our film output has type printing as squares (what I understand to be non definition font characters).

This problem is intermittent and non-repeatable. I will resend the offending page without changing my setup and get good output. It is also not exclusive to any specific font or file type (we have gotten the error with Type1, Trutype, composite and Opentype files).

The only pattern I can discern is that it seems to be exclusive to PDF files created in InDesign, and as far as I can tell the problem does not occur when we output from a Windows Machine.

Has anyone else seen this? Can anyone offer any troubleshootong advice?
