Batch Converting to 450 pixels by 450 pixels canvas size

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to Automate the process of taking a batch of 72 dpi jpgs of various sizes and resizing them to an equally horizontal/vertical canvas size. The files I have are basically all different sizes - none of which are "Square". I want the converted files to be square.

Ultimately I want to crop each file to it's horizontal or vertical dimension, whichever is longest.

I've looked through the bundled scripts and actions in photoshop but no luck.

Any help would be appreciated
