Unbelievable, mes amis, -my problem was that I had forgotten to load the modified .ps file onto the printer. This explains why I was seeing the change on the screen -it then pulling from the Adobe distiller- and not on the print (which, of course, was pulling from the printer hard drive). Well, I loaded it -after being stunned by my astonishing oversight- and voila!, -we're all happy again. Incroyable!
