Aandi, I looked at pages 128-129 but could not find a plausible explanation.
I'm inclined to think that the problem is specific to this DPS implementation.

Gernot, Adobe makes it clear that cr/lf/cr-lf must not be a problem and that should include pipes. The fact that I can do the hex -> jpeg-and-ascii85 at all (in two steps), shows that there is no problem
in this department.

I too wrote a few image processing routines (in Fortran), but chickened out re DCT, it seems quite a job (not to program, but to learn). I am happy that my DPS can do it for me.

And it is great that now I can ascii85 encode jpg files and put these images in my good ol' troff. Colour, images, 3d in troff, who would have thought that?
