AANDI, YOU ARE A GEM. Yeah, with two filters one needs not two, but three file objects: ---- /file1 (hello) (w) file def /file2 file1 /ASCII85Encode filter def /file3 file2 << /Columns W /Rows H /Colors 3 >> /DCTEncode filter def ---- You write to file3 and close files 3, 2 and 1, in this sequence. How on earth could I miss that? I declare "age" an honorary 4 letter word. ==== Gernot, in "/file2 file1 /ASCII85Encode filter def" the key word is "filter", it needs a file object and the name of a filter as parameters. They are "file1" and "/ASCII85Encode", resp. In turn it leaves a file on the stack, which 'gets stored in "file2" by "def"'. Regarding hex input: "readstring" reads the "hex file" through a filter and produces a binary string. This can be fed to DCT. I find the Bible rather confusing. The notions of "file" and "file object" are not well defined, sometimes they seem to be used interchangeably, and the lack of an example is a real time-waster for everyone concerned. Well, there are those who know, those who know and can explain somehow, and those very few who know and can explain crystal clear... Lotsa thanks, Miklos
