Gernot, I dunno much about BMP, but having an SGI machine, most of my things are in SGI-RGB format. I am an engineer, so that (rightly or wrongly) I use fortran. I had one problem with this combination: how to red-in an RGB file. As far as fortran is concerned, it is neither a formatted file, nor a formatted one... Well, I solved this problem by reading-it twice. The first reading (I don't remember whether it was formatted or unformatted), enabled me to get a few things from the header, the second read did not get the header but the body... From now on, it is easy, you have an integer matrix for an image. You can easily do alpha blending, adding/deleting, or saving it as a ps file in hex or acii85 format. Hex is huge, but PS can now turn it to jpeg and jpeg-ascii85 combination. Hurray! One more thing to be careful about: the stupidity of our beloved computer industry creeps-in in the form of endianness. When you think that you are ok, the same stuff doesn't work on another machine. Some machines and some graphic formats are little-endian, other machines and graphic formats are big-endian... Good luck Miklos
