Manually add pdfmarks to ps files

I need to create pdfmarks in ps files generated by DVIPSONE (a utility that generates ps from dvi files generated by LaTeX).

I want to create a solution that will read the ps file and create bookmarks.

I have read the pdfmark guide for Adobe Distiller, and inserted some verbatim postscript code into the LaTeX document. I have also added the bookmarks by creating them within the PDF document in the Acrobat application.

But these methods are too cumbersome for a long-term solution since the documents are large and change constantly.

I would like a practical example to help me generate bookmarks. I am thinking there is a predictable pattern to identify the headings within the postscript, for example, and use that code to generate bookmarks.

I need this solution to be as automated as possible--I'm not opposed to writing code. I appreciate any suggestions or examples.
