Well, Sir, I've been going at it with this advice of yours, but I'm still missing the mark. Perhaps a few pointers will help.. 

..like: How do you disable showpage? I tried redefining it: 

place insert data 
gsave 
/showpage {} def 
run .eps 
grestore 
showpage 

This knocks out the showpage, but then I can't get it back. Nothing runs. 

Looking through a glass darkly (and thanks for the help you've given already, as at least I have a direction to head in),
