Your disabling of showpage is correct, but your saving/restoring is
not.  You need to preserve all the dictionary and variable values, not
just the graphic state, so you use save/restore, not gsave/grestore.

Look hard at save/restore, they are surprisingly powerful, and a pity
they aren't in more languages...
