I do something like this in putting together my DOSSIER (www.ptf.com/dossier) volumes. I haven't gotten into printer options, but I do play with the scaling and translation of the pages. I also add footers, bleeder tabs, and PDF bookmarks. 

I use a set of Perl scripts to do these things.  If you are interested in this approach, get in touch with me (rdm@cfcl.com); I can give you some code to start with. 

As for the details of concatenating PS files, I got the necessary information from Acumen Journal (http://www.acumentraining.com/AcumenJournal.html; March 2001); "PostScript Tech - Concatenating PostScript Files".
