I'm glad you've found some useful information, but as a fully paid-up
pendant, and someone who'se written a PostScript interpreter, I feel I
should point out that findfont has no such limitation. However, type 1
fonts designed for use with ATM (as all Adobe fonts were until
recently) have to follow a restricted set of language features.

Any level 2 or above printer should process this fragment correctly
(whatever Publisher might do!)

(Name with spaces) /Helvetica-Bold findfont 10 dict
copy dup /FID undef definefont

/Helvetica findfont 20 scalefont setfont
72 500 moveto (Helvetica text) show

(Name with spaces) findfont
20 scalefont setfont
72 480 moveto (Name with space text) show
showpage

Bookman-Light is one of the 35 fonts standard in almost every
PostScript printer (except the 17 font editions). This mapping dates
from the release of the "Microsoft TrueType Font Pack" in the early
nineties, which had TrueType fonts nominally equivalent (more or less)
to the base 35 fonts. (I paid over $100 for this font pack, I seem to
recall. Microsoft now gives most of them away). None of these fonts
had matching names, so the mappings of these 35 fonts are simply
hardcoded. Don't try to assume any general rule! For instance,
drivers simply know that Century Gothic,BOLD (600 weight) is to be
printed as AvantGarde-Demi.

The behaviour of a driver is based on these rules, and the driver's
PPD. Since the job of an EPS is to be device independent, it probably
should go no further than the base 35 without embedding.
