If Reader shows the font at all, it shows Distiller could find the
font - embedded or not.  View > Use Local Fonts can help you check
whether it is embedded, but has no influence on how the distillation
worked.

I guess it depends EXACTLY what you want to test. That may be why we
do not seem to be agreeing - different objectives.

The test I have in mind is whether an EPS is suitable for printing, in
general, to any printer. Since Distiller can supplement its available
fonts with those on your computer, Distiller is not automatically a
valid test. If Distiller is reduced only to the original fonts shipped
with it, and none of your type 1 fonts, the test becomes valid - but
the Distiller log will tell you what you need to know (and must be
checked, because of certain font substitution issues) - not viewing in
Acrobat.

If you are checking for other things, other test apply.
