Hi there! I have a question about PPDs and how they work... I'm wondering if it's possible to adapt a PPD to do the following... When I select my printer (AGFA AccuSet 800) and go to print (from QuarkXPress), depending on the PPD I choose I'd like to determine whether the In-RIP Separations feature is selected or not. Does that make sense!? You see, what I'd like to see in my list of PPDs in Quark is 'AccuSet' and 'AccuSet with In-RIP Seps', so that I can choose on-the-fly whichever is appropriate for the particular job I happen to be outputting. Is this at all possible? I've tinkered with the existing PPD and the only way I can get this to work is by creating two identical printers and then applying the two different PPDs when setting them up in the Chooser. I'd rather just have one printer and choose the relevant PPD. Hope I don't sound too ignorant! This is an area which I haven't needed to do much work in before so I'm rather unsure of what can/can't be done. Thanks for any advice you may have :-) Juerg

It is clearly possible to edit the PPD to enable selecting in-RIP-separation. But I'm not sure if the printer driver (the real piece of program that implements the GUI) will process this newly added option.

Here we have an ECRM RIP that drives both a Stingray imagesetter and an Epson 7600 inkjet -- two very different devices -- but we use the same PPD for both. The appropriate printer still has to be chosen; a PPD alone will not make the selection. (We don't use in-RIP separations often, but the RIP can be configured to separate composite jobs while leaving pre-separated ones alone.) Unless I'm missing something, it sounds as if setting up a couple of different Print Styles in XPress (e.g. one with "Separations" chosen and one that uses "Composite CMYK" instead), both using the same PPD, would be what you're looking for. --Odysseus

It is possible to have 2 ppds for the imagesetter, one with the default for in-rip set to true, the other to false. I have done this for, for example, ganging on an Avantra44, and press profiles for Agfa Apogee. However, you may find that when you select the ppd in Quark, there is a clash between the Quark printer properties and those set in your Chooser (assuming you are outputting to a real printer, not to a file). Would it not be simpler just to create 2 separate Print Styles in Quark?

haymarket,
Would it not be simpler just to create 2 separate Print Styles in Quark?
Not possible. Print Styles only hold the job-specific information set with XPress, NOT the printer-specific information accessed throught the 'Printer...' button of the Print dialog. If only it were that easy... :-/
I have two PPDs - one with In-RIP seps on, one with In-RIP seps off. If I select my printer (which by default has In-RIP Seps off) and then select my 'In-RIP Seps ON' PPD in the Print dialog, the In-RIP Seps instructions are ignored and the file prints as a composite.
Am I missing something here?
Many thanks,
Juerg
