Good evening, Would anybody be so kind, please, to tell me what is the relation between supercells and irrational screening? I mean: Are they compatible or do they exclude each other? I am just polishing a very basic paper on prepress and printing and I cannot clarify myself in this point Thanks a lot in advance. Gustavo Snchez (Posted from Spain)

Gustavo Irrational Tangent Screening is described in Prepress's Tech reports. It appears to be an approximation of the requested print effects (angles, screen frequencies) using conventional AM screening technology. See <http://www.prepress.pps.com/TechReports/screeningtr.html#irrational> Supercells are described in Adobe's Technical Support database <http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/210f6.htm> as a technology which increases the number of gray levels available to a printer, thereby improving graduated screen appearance. From what I can see (not having tested this), irrational screening pushes existing print devices to create visual illusions, while supercells attempt to improve device performance using more specific technology. Hope that helps. Gunnar

Gunnar, Thanks a lot, I've been told at comp.lang.postscript newsgroup (I apologize for a bit of crossposting) that they are both excluding technologies/approaches to achieve the same goal or, at least a very similar one: Overcoming the limitations geometry and arithmetic impose on the AM screening methods. As for what I have seen, Adobe development seems to exclude the irrational screening in favour of supercells. Am I right? (hope so). Thanks. Gustavo Snchez (Posted from Spain)

Gustavo Hola, y in my experience, Adobe has always been in favour of a technologically sound solution rather than illusions, so I would assume that they would prefer supercells. On the other hand, while I haven't seen Adobe specs for this, there are devices which may not handle them; it makes sense to have the irrational screening. Adobe can answer this far better than myself. felicidad Gunnar (posted from Canada)
