setcustcrgb Vs. setcustc for Pantone call

This may be a question for quark folks, but is there a good reason why all the Adobe RIPs I've tried ignore a setcustcrgb Pantone call (from quark composite RGB mode) but interpret correctly setcustc Pantone call (from quark composite CMYK mode)The Pantone name info and color component quartet (or triad) is the same in both cases, just the syntax is different (setcustcrgb Vs. setcustc) You can confirm this by defining a Pantone named spot color to 100k, then output from quark 4.1x or 5x in both composite RGB and composite cmyk mode. cmyk gives the real pantone color (instead of 100k) RGB gives 100k. Is quark just doing something that is not allowed? or is Adobe breaking things here?

A RIP should not interpret either of those, as neither one is standard PostScript. But you will probably find procedure definitions for those names inside the PostScript file itself. Aandi Inston

OK right. as I just figured out by doing a "find" on setcustc on the red book pdf. I suppose I'll be having a follow up question to this after I find that procedure... Thanks.

Some RIPs do define "setcmykcustomcolor". That isn't standard, but it does allow some of Quark's composite spot colour output to separate. Have fun tracing those procedures. I did it once, and it took a long time... Aandi Inston

you're not kidding. yuck. I'm looking right at the procedure, ("Find" saves the day again, but it may as well be klingon for me.) I guess I have to pick up some PS coding books. Any recommendations?
Aside from the PS code, is there any way for me to dig around in the RIP? distiller interprets the setcustc (and not setcuscrgb) similarly to my Hardware rips. Anyway to look in there?

You'll certainly need the PostScript Language Reference Manual. Depending on your programming and graphics experience you may need training materials too. But on the other hand, you could just take it as a bonus. By Quark's design, composite PostScript does NOT separate spot colours. Some RIP makers have found a way to pick up some of these cases and separate them despite Quark's intentions. Aandi Inston
