Help with printing a text file with Japanese characters

Hello,

I have a text file with Japanese characters that I need to convert to postscript. I have a little program that creates a postscript file for English, but it is having trouble with the double-byte characters.

I have taken a very simple file with a couple asian characters and did a print to file to see what the post script looked like, and it is exponentially more complicated than what I am doing for the English.

I am looking for something generic that I can wrap around my Japanese, so that it will print correctly.

Any help would be most appreciated,

Thanks,
Brian

It certainly is!

There are major obstacles. To start with, are you definitely printing
this to a Japanese printer which will have a resident Japanese font?
Or must this also work to Western printers?

Hi Brian,

Search inside the Ghostscript package utilities. I thing, this is a possible solution.

WTW our team have a utility to manage doublebyte Japanese fonts to make creative calligramas. See this link and enjoy: <http://femfum.com/bin/orientals.pdf>

Hope this helps,

Hello,

This will be on a printer located in Japan. The program I have is on UNIX, and I can send the plain text down to my printer before postscripting it, and the Japanese characters look great.

We have many other apps that create postscripts automatically, and it looks like they are using either MS Gothic or Mincho. I don't believe I have a problem with the font, I just need to know what the minimum amount of postscripting I need to insert into the text to make the postscript come out like the text does.

Thanks,
Brian

That's good, but will you be able to test it? You will need to do
lots of testing.

A Japanese PostScript printer will have a resident Japanese font. You
need to be familiar with composite fonts, CID fonts, and Japanese
encoding methods (including what the text uses now). But more than
that, you need to know what kind of resident fonts the printer has. If
it is very recent you can probably assume CID font, if it is older it
may be obscure and barely documented font formats.

The program will essentially select a font; select an encoding; and
send the data, just like for Roman fonts. The first two steps are the
killer.

As well as the PostScript Language Reference manual, you will want to
check out the technotes on http://partners.adobe.com/, some of which
have crucial lists and other information.

If you aren't familiar with Japanese encoding methods, I would
recommend also getting the O'Reilly book "CJKV Information
Processing".

They will be generating a subsetted font for download to the printer.
That is much more work than what I described. The reason for
subsetting is that a full Japanese font can easily be 20 megabytes in
size.

If you were on Windows with Japanese language support, you could of
course use the Windows API to print, streamlining things considerably-
in fact removing all PostScript puzzles.
