Gents, I need to convert a few big ps files to pdf, and I would like to arrange them them in a easily readable form. I've downloaded TN 5150, the pdfmark Reference Manual and was looking for means to control the "look and feel" of the pdf document. e.g.: - how to describe the width of the bookmark pane, - how to make the font size in the bookmark pane smaller, - how to put tabs into bookmark strings to neatly align them, - how to hide the menu and command bars, - how to control the document pane for port/landscape pages, etc, and could not find anything. I know how the thing would look right, and I could spare the reader a lot of clicking, yet I can't do this. Why? It is true that my settings could not be realized on all screens, but couldn't Acrobat use the info given by the author when it can, and turn to defaults only when it is not possible? While at it, could I suggest to re-write this whole document by someone who not only knows his stuff but also knows how to present it to people other than his expert buddies (who don't need the book anyway)? Happy New Year Folks, Miklos

See the Viewer Preferences Dictionary in the PDF Reference. > >- how to control the document pane for port/landscape pages, etc Not sure I understand that one. >While at it, could I suggest to re-write this whole document by >someone who not only knows his stuff but also knows how to present >it to people other than his expert buddies (who don't need the >book anyway)? Well, experts do need a reference... one key point is that you really need to know the PDF format itself; the pdfmark is just a way of accessing it. Aandi Inston

Jeez, Aandi, that was quick! Thank you. Regarding portrait/landscape: I have a mix of these in my document. When one views portrait in Acroread and a landscape page comes along, it is scaled down by acrobat to fit in the pane. Then the user needs to enlarge the pane. That's what I'd like to avoid, that is every page would adjust the pane size as the author wanted it, if possible under the circumstances. Yeah, I know that experts do need manuals too. But this is no excuse for sloppy work, for lack of explanations, for missing figures, for not very logical sequences, for examples that flow into each other when a simple empty line could make things much more readable, etc. If I can write about a thing in a way that only experts recognize it, and I can write about it in a way that everyone can grasp it easily, then it is a sin not to go the second way... That's why I thought that if Adobe's name is on this document, then it needs to be re-written. Regarding the menu and command bars, thanks for the suggestion, I'll investigate. Thank you Miklos
