PICT preview

I've added TIFF preview support and now want to add PICT preview support to EPS files exported by my app (will add WMF support to Windows version).

I simply get a PicHandle to my image and add it to the resource fork of my EPS file as 'PICT' and id of 256. It looks just fine in ResEdit but when I place the EPS file in Word X, I get a blank image (not even the text that says no preview was included). Placing a Photoshop EPS file with a PICT preview in Word looks fine. However, an Illustrator EPS file with PICT preview does not show up in Word.

The documentation from Adobe (partners.adobe.com/asn/developer/pdfs/tn/5002.EPSF_Spec.pdf) us of some help but seems incomplete. For example, it doesn't mention the fact that TIFF previews can't have a pixel depth of more than 8-bit which I figured out on my own. I'm wondering if there are similar limitations with the PICT preview such as it must be 8-bit and a bitmap. Can anyone suggest anything or point me to some better documentation?

Never mind, I did more searching and from a different source, found that a PICT bitmap was required.

Note that the limitations you have found (8 bit TIFF, bitmap PICT) are
NOT requirements, rules or limitations of the EPS format. They are
simply limitations in specific applications.

It is a big problem, since both formats are very versatile, that
applications may not support perfectly valid EPS files. The only
advice I can give is to test widely, and use the very simplest file
formats you can.

Chin, we have a commercial library that would allow you to add WMF, EMF, SVG, CGM, MIF, HPGL export to your app on Windows, Linux and UNIX platforms, using your EPS output as input. This would save you a lot of time and work over writing filters yourself! See URL below for details. If interested, you're welcome to contact me directly.
