general issues with Export to Mpeg

I'm running
Supermicro Dual Processor PIII 850
768 MB Ram, a 20 GB SCSI system Disk Win XP SP2 and Premier Pro 1.5
two 40 Gig IDE drives for the video work. my burner is Sony DRU720A
my camera is a Cannon GL2

I'm trying to get Export to DVD to work. this project is 1 hour 40 min vid
The first attempt it did the transcoding and then I got the Assembling Error/unknown Error.
I Installed Microsoft KB886716 and Main Concepts 1.1 update
I didn't Install KB885222 because my Firewire works fine and I don't want
to risk screwing it up. Premiere captured a 60 min tape (19 Gig file) with zero dropped frames. It doesn't get much better than that. <grin>

Rebooted, started Export to Mpeg and went to bed.
12 hours later it hadn't gotten beyond 5 bars on the status
this time there's no error. the darn thing seems to be stuck.

the transcoding bar looks complete (just like before)
12 hours later it hadn't gotten beyond 5 bars on the status
Task Manager shows about 70% processor usage and memorys down to almost nothing. I finally canceled and rebooted. Did I give up too soon? maybe another 12 hours would help?

I can't even figure out where the Mpeg files are being written. I have all my Premiere scratch drives pointing to my Empty 40 GB IDE that's reserved for that purpose and that's where I export my video to. I've checked all the drives (while the Export to DVD ran) and can't find the Mpeg files.
4GB of files makes a pretty good dent on a hard drive. They shouldn't be that hard to find. <grin> So where does the MPeg work files go? I'd assume it would be where the project is stored?

how about settings... I was using the default 4x3 High Quality 4MB VBR 2 pass. My target for the dvd is the general consumer desktop dvd player.
do I really need that much quality? I'm currently trying the Export again with 4x3 Low Qual 3MB VBR 1 pass. Assuming it works (a huge assumption)
will it look horrible? I hoping it will at least look better than a VCD.

so what settings are you guys using? I'm helping out as an Archivist for the University's Theater Dept. I film the plays (one fixed camera) and we give the director & cast copies. The Theater Dept keeps 2 copies for their archives. It doesn't have to be HD TV quality. Just something decent to watch.

I've done some searching on this board. I saw issues raised about Nero messing up main concepts DVD software. There's no way I could totally uninstall Nero. I depend on it too much. Is there a particular component that I need to uninstall?

thanks
Ray

Try exporting to an AVI and letting Encore make the DVD for you.
