Hello all, Premier Pro (v7.0 per the About screen) running on an AlienWare P4, 2.0 Ghz, 1GB memory, Windows XP Pro, editing drive is WD MyBookII Pro TB. I usually work with short clips, 10 - 15 minutes in length. I'm currently working on a DVD that runs 50 minutes in length total, but is essentially a bunch of shorter clips strung together seperated by very basic title screens created in Premier Pro. My current problem is Premier freezes up when I try to render to avi. No error, just stops on a particular frame and requires a ctrl+alt+del. I seem to have narrowed the problem down to the title screens. If I remove all of the title screens, the project will render to avi without problems. Also, the project renders to mpeg-2 fine even with the title screens. So, will render to mpeg-2 no problem, will render to avi only without title screens, but will not render to avi with title screens. I've spent the past hour reading the support forums here and have found similar, but not exact issues (larger still images being used, color problems in the movie after rendering, effects being used...etc.). None of the solutions so far have fixed my issue. The titles created are the default size 720x480 and are just basic white text on a black screen, so there was nothing to resize. I've tried importing the project into a new project file to no avail. I've tried deleting all the title screens and recreating from scratch...etc. Any thoughts on what is causing this issue, and/or what I can do to resolve it? I really need these very basic title screens. The reason I want to export to avi is so I can import into my dvd authoring program to actually create the DVD with menus and an image slideshow. I'm assuming an avi has less compression (is a better quality file) to start with than an mpeg-2 file? Is this correct? Or, since I can render to mpeg-2, should I go ahead and just use this file to use in the authoring program (which will then burn to DVD, rendering the whole -thing to mpeg-2 again?) Just didn't want to lose any quality due to being rendered to mpeg-2 twice. Thanks all.

1) The titles were created by Premiere or imported? 2) What kind of avi file? There are many ... not all avi formats are supported by Premiere, so what have you selected? 3) What are your project settings? 4) What are the properties of your source clips? GB

1) The titles were created by Premiere or imported? -Created in Premier. Very basic, white text on black background. Default size of 720x480. 2) What kind of avi file? There are many ... not all avi formats are supported by Premiere, so what have you selected? -Microsoft DV Avi, using the Premier Export > Movie function. 3) What are your project settings? -Not sure what you are referring to, what settings do I need to check here for you? 4) What are the properties of your source clips? -Original source clips are in raw avi format, captured directly from mini-dv and then imported into the project. Some further info if it helps: I do very basic video editing work for some adult website companies. Basically this editing involves cutting content down to web size clips (5 - 10 minutes), and encoding to various formats for the web. My process is to edit the clip, render that clip back to avi, then use Cleaner XL to batch encode multiple avi clips into whatever web format is needed. What is relevant in this info here is, for the past three years I have used the exact same editing/titling/rendering process on the short clips I am now trying to use on this 50 minute movie. I used all the same title screens, editing and rendering process...etc. Up until now I have experienced no problems. The issue seems to be tied to the title screens and the length of the movie, as again it will render without the title screens and will render if it is a shorter length. Maybe a memory related issue?

Given that I frequently do exactly what you describe, with similar length clips and simple title cards between clips ... on a very modest system, I wouldn't start by assuming memory issues. More to the point, your title cards seem pretty ordinary, and fifteen minute clips are not overlong. A whole project that barely runs an hour is not large ... So what is it about your title cards? I'm surprized that you keep quoting title card size -- I thought the title cards were automatically matched to your project? Your source clips are not 'raw' -- they are DV. Your export matches your source ... which should be a no-brainer. What happens if you set the work area bar to simply extend over the end of one clip, a title and the beginning of the next ..? Can you export a simple little bit of your project with a title card? GB

I'm surprized that you keep quoting title card size -- I thought the title cards were automatically matched to your project? -I only keep referring to the size of the title cards as in my search on the help forums for this issue, I found a post referring to very large still images causing Premier to freeze during rendering. The solution was to resize those images down to 720x540. I included my title card size to as to illustrate the images are already sized down. What happens if you set the work area bar to simply extend over the end of one clip, a title and the beginning of the next ..? Can you export a simple little bit of your project with a title card? -This does not work for me either. The movie starts with two title screens, and then the first clip starts. I tried extending the work bar to cover just the first two title screens and just a little bit of the first clip. When I go to render to avi it immediately freezes at frame 1, which corresponds to the start of the first title card. Thanks.

Actually, let me now backtrack a bit. I went back and started a new project, imported a 5 minute avi clip previously captured from mini dv, added my default title screen that I have been using for the past 3 years and behold...it also now fails out rendering to avi. Again, I've been doing this same process for many years now, on the same system, nothing has changed. In fact, I used a clip I have previously edited in this fashion to make sure the source clip was all good. In all my reading today I seem to remember something about an internal memory cache or history, or something to that effect, that you can clear out in Premier itself? I can't find that post now so can't find the details. Anyone know what this may be referring to? I'm stumped now on to why this isn't working for me...
