Rendering: Low quality, could use an FAQ

I know, others have had this very problem. I have some AVI files, 720x480, 16x9 ratio, pretty standard. I've edited them into sequences, and eventually, these will be embedded into Powerpoint slides. So, I'd like to render them into smaller files and, if possible, smaller sizes, to make the presentation more portable. I've tried rendering them with smaller dimensions (360 x 240) as AVIs, Windows media files, and even Quicktime. And the results are usually pretty artifact-y: they look like poorly compressed JPEGS. Of course, there are any number of things I could adjust, and maybe there are some codecs out there that offer better results than what came with Premiere Pro v 7.0. Is there a decent FAQ on how I could possibly correct this?

Apart from the fact that you are using 4:3 ratio standards to fit material you say is 16:9, the single biggest determiner of 'quality', especially as concerns artifacts, is bit rate. Higher bit rate equals bigger file and higher image quality. GB
