What filters are used when encoding to wmv9?

Hi everybody :) What filters are used when encoding to wmv9 with Premiere Pro 1.5? The output footage looks very smooth but isn't blurry and has a quite good quality at an moderate bit rate. Recently I tried to encode a similar video with DivX and it didn't even roughly look so smooth as the other one encoded with PP 1.5 and wmv9. So which filters are used? Thanks in advance for your answers, Pawel

There are no filters used, it is the 'quality' of the encoding codec that delivers better results. Different codecs have different qualities, some are more demanding of the CPU during encoding, some more demanding of the CPU during playback, some are better at motion, some at resolution, some at chroma depth ... You have discovered that Windows wmv9 is quite good -- stick with it. GB

Hy, Ok maybe vmw9 is better than DivX, although I think that Premiere has something to do with the quality. As I encoded the footage with wmv9 too but using another application, the quality wasn't that fine. So it seems to me that it's not enough to just encode the footage with wmv9 :) Bye for now, Pawel

The encoder just uses Premiere as an interface -- the quality is not affected by Premiere. The choices you make are the only impact you have on quality -- if you make identical choices in frame size, data rate, frame rate, et cetera ... you will get the same results. GB

GB, I have to disagree. While DivX now works with PPro fine (i. e. doesn't crash) - the output quality is quite poor. I had to frameserve from PPro to VirtualDub (see the FAQ). I don't know why direct encoding from PPro in DivX (and QuickTime) suffers - probably it's because PPro cannot pass certain encoding parameters to the encoder (e.g. you cannot do 2-pass QuickTime or Flash from PPro). I don't know whether it's caused by legal (dis?)agreements, or by developers' decisions.

I don't think we disagree, Uri -- if you can't select the same parameters from within Premiere, as you say, you won't get the same results. However, when you can select identical parameters, you will get identical results as Premiere isn't actually 'doing' the encoding -- it is using the installed codec. Clear as mud? Cheers, GB

Hi, thanks for your replies. Actually I was using VirtualDub as encoding to DivX. And as I just encoded that footage with the Media Encoder it didn't look really much better than the DivX video. It was worse than the another one encoded with PP, though the settings were the same.

Are you saying the settings are the same when comparing DivX to WMV? They can't be ... that's rather the point. I've lost the train of thought in this thread. GB

Strictly speaking in strict "scientific" terms - yes we're in agreement. But from practical point of view - PPro allows (through permitting or forbidding modification of many parameters and through having unchangeable defaults of better or poorer quality) much greater encoding optimization of WMV and (to some extent) MPEG2 than of QuickTime, DivX, MPEG4 and Flash. So the practical end result is that PPro does not allow equal quality (or identical results) for different formats.

There is no doubt in my mind that PPro is not the best tool for every task -- but the pedant in me wants to be clear on what the role of PPro is in making the compession ... it is a front-end, that allows control (or not) of the task performed by the installed dlls, drivers, codecs, et cetera. And your final statement does not parse accurately as a consequence -- it does allow equal and identical ... but there may be other tools that will generate different and even better. Cheers, GB
