Hi, I've just bought for my Mac running Os 9.1 a new inkjet printer, the HP CP1700PS complete with software RIP which appears to be some OEM form of PressReady Light or Basics. I must say that this printer rocks until I use the RIP but the support folk at HP in the UK don't know much about it, even trying to refer me to Adobe for support which implies to me that they've got hold of a wildcat by the tail. Anyways, if anyone here can shed any light on my problems, I would be very grateful. (I should add, after reading all the archived posts here, that HP claim that this printer and RIP will work in OsX (Classic) but I haven't tried it.) Here are some typical issues that I'm seeing: Mystery Postscript errors in mid print run -- sometimes the printer will stop halfway through a page and the RIP tells me I have a Postscript error, this despite the fact that the same (small) page is being printed 10 times and the previous 8 copies printed out ok!! My RIP log gives no clue as to the nature of the error and I have RAM and disk space a-plenty so they aren't the culprit. I have also doubled the memory footprint of the RIP, the Desktop Print Monitor, Print Monitor, etc. When using AdobePS, which is allegedly supported, I lose a lot of functionality. The RIP has two settings functions - one is called Default Settings and the other is Job Specific settings. The latter is greyed out when using the AdobePS driver (I've tried all versions up to and including 8.8) and I can't even force the current job to read from the Default settings which, for example, instruct the printer to print from paper tray #2. Whatever I do when using AdobePS, the printer will only use paper tray #1, which I can't live with for reasons too long to elaborate on. Apple's Laserwriter 8 restores functionality but imho it is an inferior driver - and it produces very different colour output to AdobePS. Also the RIP print window won't accept Quark files as desktop jobs. If I try to load a job manually, it will only see Photoshop or Word files: Quark files don't seem to exist in the file list! At least once an hour, the RIP manages to corrupt my scratch disk (a partition of an external Firewire drive to which the RIP is pointed for spooling. The custom icon gets corrupted and I have to repair it and also trash the RIP's 'Jobs' folder to get back on track again. HP don't list Plain paper in their media types when using the RIP. How dumb is that? I often print a quick 'n' dirty to plain paper just to check work in progress. After making adjustments to the cmyk inking and contrast in the Default Settings window, they are never remembered. The next time I open the RIP, only one of my settings is remembered (contrast) and the ink settings have reverted to default. Sometimes jobs will disappear in a puff of smoke just as they are about to RIP. I get no warning, no alert, no trace files, nothing. The job shows up in the print window for 10 seconds and then disappears. I read that this was an issue with PressReady 1.0 and Adobe posted an upgrade, allegedly to fix it. But the upgrade was in 2000 and my RIP is a 2001 product so presumably would have incorporated the upgrade. In any event, there are no upgrades of any kind available for my OEM version. That's about it. I thought that my old Epson 1520 StylusRIP software was flaky but this HP version wins hands down on that score. It's such a pity because, in RGB mode this is a stunning printer; and also this version of the RIP claims to be able to output at 1200dpi (not tested yet) compared with the 720dpi ceiling on my old Epson RIP. Thanks for any clues....
