Mari,

Because you refer to a "serial version," I'll assume you're on Mac OS.

There is an Epson 3000 update, but the only way to get it that I know of is via FTP access:

ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/pressready/mac/1.x/updaters/

If you don't have an FTP client program, try copying and pasting the above address into your browser.

According to the accompanying text file...

The Epson Stylus Color 3000 Update addresses two problems with the initial
release of PressReady: -	It adds support for USB printing to the The Epson
Stylus Color 3000. Previously, it was not possible to print via a USB
port from PressReady to the Epson Stylus Color 3000. -	It fixes a problem
with the manual feed feature of the Epson Stylus Color 3000, where paper
placed in the manual feed slot of the Epson Stylus Color 3000 is ejected
      before a job prints.

Also, I wonder about your parallel to USB converter. You wrote "a parallel to usb converted cable." If it is not the Epson adapter cable, you may or may not have problems.
