Ok, so i'm going to print a poster and I need to decide which one is the better choice.

It's a poster that's meant to be for archival purposes and will be framed in a gallery.

Should I pick giclee printing or the digital printing?

What are the pros and cons of these printing methods?

Thanks for everything,
Michael.

Michael,

Gicle is a form of digital printing; a fancy name for inkjet printing for fine art. See: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gicl>e

Other forms include xerographic reproduction and even today's offset printing is digital -- to a point.

For best quality (most life-like, rich intense color), low quantity, I'd be leaning toward large-format inkjet. Archive is 75-100 years or longer (depending upon ink type, print medium, light levels, UV glass, temperature, humidity, etc., up to about 200 years). You can check with Epson or Canon.

Maybe someone else has experience with the other technologies...

Michael,

This is a respected, high-end lab. Not cheap, but very good. <http://www.duggal.com/c21_giclee_fine_art_printing.aspx>

That said, I would prefer to work with a good local lab where I could walk in the door.

Michael,

We worked with Duggal a few years ago, and were always impressed with the quality of their work. Stop by and talk with them. See samples of their work. Ask them the questions about print longevity and recommendations for making and displaying your prints.

As you're in New York, remember, there are a lot of shops that would be clambering for your business.
