The watermark functionality was provided only with the AdobePS 4.x drivers for Windows'9x/Me and AdobePS 8.x drivers for MacOS 9.2 (and earlier). No such functionality is provided by the AdobePS 5.x drivers for Windows NT 4 or the PSCRIPT 5.x drivers for Windows 2000/XP (the AdobePS 5.x and PSCRIPT 5.x drivers are nearly identical under the hood except for versions of OS supported).

There were two major problems with these implementations of watermarks. The first was that they didn't work with many applications that generated their own PostScript and used the driver only as a conduit to PostScript transmission to the printer. The second was that since PostScript doesn't have the concept of object transparency, the watermarks were quite often totally obscured by page content or page content was obscured by the watermark.

The workaround with the better graphical result is to create a PDF file from your content and then, in Acrobat 5.0.5, use the rubberstamp facility to do watermarking. Make your own custom watermark in Illustrator and use transparency to make the watermark effect realistic.
