Hello Everyone,

We are having a lot of problems outputting symbol glyphs from Adobe
FrameMaker. I will post this to the Frame forum as well, but I
thought I might get an answer here as well.

We are running:
Win 2K
Frame 7
MathType 4
Adobe PS print driver 4.5.3.

We use MathType 4 for equations and the preferences are designed to
use "Symbol" font for lower and upper case Greek symbols. The
preferences are also set up to "fake italicize" the lower and upper
case greek symbols as this is how they should properly be
represented... If we print the equation from MathType it prints fine.

When we save the equation out to EPS from MathType and import it by
reference into FrameMaker, the Greek symbols are replaced with Courier
when printed. When we PDF, the Greek symbols are replaced by Courier.
I understand this is because "Symbol, Italic" does not exist and
therefore the system substitutes Courier.

So, I switched the preferences in MathType to use MT Symbol, Italic,
which is a font that MathType used to offer many years ago but no
longer ships with the product. Everything prints and PDFs fine.
Problem solved.

I decided to investigate where this MT Symbol, Italic font came from
to ensure that we wouldn't get into any licensing issues if I sent the
fonts to my typesetting staff.

It turns out that MT Symbol, Italic is a font that MathType used to
ship with their product many years ago. I have pasted a detailed
explanation of why they no longer ship MT Symbol, Italic below:

>> MT Symbol is a font that my company designed in order to have an
Italic
>> version
>> of Symbol. The old Windows 3.1 PostScript driver wasn't intelligent
enough >> to
>> slant Symbol when the user wanted to print italics, so we created
MT Symbol >> as a seperate font so that it wouldn't have a choice.
The characters are
>> simply slanted, so it can't really be called a true italic version.
>> Actually, if you are using Windows 95 then you don't need MT Symbol
because >> Microsoft
>> finally fixed their PostScript driver, and MT Symbol is based on
the
>> existing
>> Symbol font.

>> You can get the font with our MathType equation editing software
package. We
>> currently include both a Type 1 version and a TrueType version. We
don't >> >> sell the font seperately at this time and are not likely
to since it won't >> be needed on today's Windows systems.

We are running Win 2K, with the Adobe PS 4.5.3. printer driver. Surely
the issue described above has been corrected in Win 2K and Adobe PS
4.5.3. So my question is, if we no longer need MT Symbol, Italic to
output the italicized characters, why does it still not work when we
print or PDF from Frame? And, why does it work from MathType?

Thank you to anyone who can help,
Kevin Gibson
