Minimum page size question

Currently under Windows XP, the minimum page size (height or width) you can use when printing to a postscript device is 1.00 inches. This is regardless of the minimum value set in the PPD for the postscript print device. This was not the case under Windows 98.

After exhaustive testing, I've found that if you attempt to use a value smaller than 1.00 inch for height or width, you get your output centered at the top of an 8.5" x 11" output page.

I've been in discussion with Microsoft about this and they have confirmed that there is a minimum value set in the PSCRIPT5.DLL code, but that it is by design.

I've also been in discussion with a print driver developer who claims that the PPD values, if specified and able to be read, should be used and the minimums in the PSCRIPT5.DLL code should only apply if PPD values are not available.

Although I have no experience in print driver development, I can understand Microsoft not wanting to allow a value of "zero". I'd just like to see them leave the PPD values alone if they're present (and maybe non-zero).

If Microsoft is supposed to abide by the 4.3 PPD spec, is their implementation in conformance by limiting the page size parameters (height and/or width) at 1.00 inch? Or do they not necessarily have to abide by that? I'm trying to figure out what the "rules" are and if they're being followed.

I've seen PPD files for postscript printer drivers that specify minimum values of 4 pts, but they obviously won't work that way under Windows XP.

Thanks,
Chris
