Up until about 12 years ago, Hewlett-Packard licensed Adobe PostScript from Adobe. Then, in an effort to have more control over their products and to save (literally) just a few dollars per printer (at the time selling for over $1000 per unit), Hewlett-Packard chose to license a third party emulation of PostScript from a company named Xionics. LaserJets since that time have been notorious in terms of having problems with PostScript generated from Adobe applications and/or graphically rich documents. HP has issued firmware patches to try to fix such problems with varying degrees of success. But still, my LaserJet 5M monochrome printer from 1995 with Adobe PostScript Level 2 never fails in terms of printing content from any of today's applications (albeit slowly with older processors of that time), whereas new LaserJets with CloneScript occasionally (very quickly) fail with such jobs either yielding PostScript errors or requiring reboots or power cycling. Most Xerox Phaser printers (other than the lowest priced ones) do have Adobe PostScript 3. Ricoh is another brand with Adobe PostScript. Always check carefully. Many of the CloneScript vendors are obviously very cagey about what their devices really have inside. Buyer, beware! - Dov
