I take a stab at this:
If you have installed Acrobat 6 on your XP system, you will indeed
have a printer called "Adobe PDF". If it was installed correctly,
it uses the PostScript printer driver which is part of Windows XP,
and which has been jointly developed by Microsoft and Adobe.
There is no printer driver that you *need* to download from Adobe,
unless your system's printer driver has been damaged somehow.
You can also choose to download Adobe's printer driver if you
want a more versatile way to install new printers on your system,
as opposed to the standard "Add Printer" wizard in Windows.

How to create a PDF file depends a little on the application
you're using. But it's perfectly OK to print to the "Adobe PDF"
printer, which should create a PDF for you. Many applications let
you choose which "job options" to use when creating the PDF.
If only a PostScript file (*.ps) is created, you need to manually
run this through the Distiller application.
