Postscript failure due to commas in filenames

I'm running CorelDraw 8.433 on Windows 2000 Professional and am trying to create a PS file (print to file) using the AdobePS Linotronic 930 V 3.3 J print driver. Everything looks great in print preview, but when I send it to print, nothing happens.

The file name that I am trying to send to print has between 30-32 characters and several of those characters are commas, which need to remain in the file name because the files are being imported into a database for storage. However, when I take the commas out of the file name, the PS file is created without problems.

The following statement is from Microsoft regarding file names: A file name can contain up to 215 characters, including spaces. However, it is not recommended that you create file names with 215 characters. Most programs cannot interpret extremely long file names.
File names cannot contain the following characters: \ / : * ? " < > |

The problem is sporadic as some files have the problem and others don't. I have tried different print drivers, different machines, as well as different versions of Corel, but the PS still fails until I remove the commas from these problem file's names.

Having read some of the discussion topics of this forum, I did check the printer ports to make sure I had one for "FILE:" and I do, so that's not the answer.

If anyone has ever heard of such problem or can give any advice to resolve the problem, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Robert Morris

Is your printer setup to print an error page on failures?

Are you talking about the "Send postscript error handler" under the advanced option settings of your printer? I changed it to "Yes", but that didn't produce anything. Otherwise, I'm not sure where you would set the printer to print the error page.

Usually when I print, a progress dialog box shows up in the bottom right of the screen and you can watch it proceed. When I send to file, I don't get any progress and within 2 seconds its over with no file created.

Thanks,

Robert

Some printers have their own set up, which would hopefully be in the
manual. But others don't, and the choice in the Printer Setup should
be as good.

Without an error report, I can't think of any way to get closer to
understanding the problem.

Unless... you could try printing to file, with and without commas, and
compare the results.

When I send this file to multiple printers, it prints okay on each of the printers. However, when I send the file to the same printers, but print to "File", if I have commas in the file name, it does nothing and no postscript file is created or any error messages given. When I take the commas out of the file name, a progress window shows it is working and the postscript file is created just fine.

The results are that if I have commas in the filename, it doesn't work and if I take them out of the file name, it does work.

Odd indeed. Does this happen with other applications, if you use the
same driver and use commas in the name?

I assume you are talking about the file name of the input file, NOT
the output print file?
