Although PostScript was designed such that rasterization takes place in the printer in the RIP (Raster Image Processor) it is sometimes convenient to have the bitmapped image which would have been produced for other purposes. Is it possible to save such a file with a "generic" driver, one which would rasterize the program in the CPU and not in the printer? For example, if you had the following code: %! Test box 10 10 moveto 0 10 rlineto 10 0 rlineto 0 -10 rlineto 2 setlinewidth closepath showpage %% EOF then you can send this code to a file instead of to the printer. Now suppose that you wish to send it to a driver and receive (at some particular resolution) the bitmap equivalent for some imaginary printer. How can this be achieved? Thanks in advance for any help.

Use Ghostscript and the utilities developped around it.

Some RIPs (e.g. those from Harlequin) have the ability to create a local bitmap instead of sending to a printer, so, yes this is possible. Aandi Inston
