I want to know who will develop the postscript hardware cip for the Z3100, HP or Adobe? And how difficult it is to make the in chip postscript programming, taking into account that the Z3100 has 12 inks. I expect that the files will be send to the printer in RGB format (not in CMYK like in the most cmyk or cmyk-lc-lm printers that have Adobe postscript 3 cip integrated). In this case, how the postscript cip will manage the distribution of the RGB color to the 12 inks? And in which way the integrated postscript cip will interact with existing paper profile, which the spectrophotometer is providing?

What do you mean by a hardware cip? Do you mean RIP? As currently released, the Hewlett-Packard Z3100 does not have any native PostScript support. Hewlett-Packard does sell a host-based PostScript RIP from EFI. EFI RIPs are Adobe PostScript 3. In terms of the details of how and what is sent by the RIP to the physical device, you would need to contact HP and/or EFI for details. - Dov

I found this on www.outdoorphotographer.com: "Adobe postscript 3 available thru EFIs RIP Designer Edition 5.16, developed with HP-specific inputs, offers new photo features and an improved user interface, giving graphic designers full control over digital proofing needs. A postscript embedded version of the HP Designjet Z Series is expected to be available in Spring 2007." The postscript embedded version is a hardhare cip that many HP printer have. I suspect that the software integrated in the cip is difficult to make for the 12 inks of Z3100, that's why the printer currently have only a software postscript rip.

Sounds like cip is a typo for chip. Mike

There really is no such thing as a "hardware RIP" or a chip(?) which processes PostScript. PostScript is a full interpretive programming language with graphics and device operators typically running under a "real time operating system" (RTOS). Any such "chip" would basically be a general purpose computer with memory in which the PostScript interpreter and its requisite RTOS, communications software, and device controllers would run. This is true for all printers with "embedded controllers" including the HP devices. - Dov

But to return to the original question, Adobe do not develop hardware RIPs, or software RIPs, for sale with or for printers. Adobe create Adobe PostScript, which is software. This may be licensed by the makers of printers, who then adapt it for the printer, and include it either as "hardware" or software with the printer, or sell separately. Not all HP printers use Adobe-licensed PostScript. Some use software developed by third parties. I don't believe HP have developed it themselves. Aandi Inston
