Can someone help me troubleshoot printing from InDesign to my Hewlett Packard Postscript printer? I can print to pdf and print that; and I can print to this same HP Postscript printer from Word and other programs. I am running Windows XP. The print summary says that it is using the correct ppd. Also: my graphics look dottier when written to pdf using "press" quality preset than they do when I print from my old system, using same printer but Ventura. Any help would be appreciated. thank you.

Known problem with InDesign 4 and Illustrator 12 on both Macintosh and Windows. Has nothing to do with driver. Will be fixed in InDesign 5 and Illustrator 13. Workaround is to export to PDF and print from Adobe Reader or Acrobat (which does NOT have this problem). - Dov

thanks, Dov, for saving me time trying to fix this. Is InDesign CS2 the same as InDesign 4? And is the problem becuase of the printer or is it a problem with all PS printers?

InDesign 4 is also known as InDesign CS2. The problem is that the Adobe PostScript Level 2 implementation in the LaserJet 4M was a little unusual (but not out-of-spec) and that the Adobe Core Technology Group that implemented the printing code was not familiar with the quirk in that implementation. The PostScript that is generated falls into that "hole" so to speak. We know of no other Adobe PostScript printers that expose this issue. Unfortunately, since the LaserJet 4M is so old (at least 12 years since that very popular model was sold new), it was tested with when InDesign 4 and Illustrator 12 were in QA during their release cycles. When the bug was found, we needed to find such a printer via eBay! - Dov

Bummer. Because the LaserJet 4 Postscript is such a reliable workhorse, that for the book work I do, I don't expect to discard it until practically forever. I'll test any "fix" patches that become availalbe.

There won't be any patches, but the problem is scheduled to be fixed for the next major release of InDesign. - Dov

Diana, though I right now cannot provide any help, I would be glad to get a sample file to look into - it might be that the quirk can be bypassed by a filter for the UNIX based spooling system (CUPS) we use. Could you post an URL to a sample file or mail one to me (h.blischke@srz.de) ? Thanks, Helge

sure, I'll email a few pages of an InDesign file to your email. Thank you. That's preferable to re-buying InDesign, in order to be able to print files.
