I have 2 computers in my shop, one runs Windows 98 the other Windows XP. They each have their own HP 5000's and are connected to a Cannon 3200 equipped with a Fiery controller over a network. The Postscript that is generated on the XP for the HP 5000 doesn't have an 04hex terminating byte so the HP prints but keeps on looking for more data and eventually generates a timeout error. When I send a job to the Canon in landscape format the paper orientation seems to be correct (judging from the Fiery software preview screen) but the text or graphic on the page is still in portrait mode. On the Windows 98 machine I don't have any of these problems. I should mention that Pagemaker output works fine on both machines. Unfortunately, 99% of our output is generated with Corel products. What I would like to know is can I get rid of the PSCRIPT5.DLL driver on the XP machine and substitute the ADOBEPS4.DRV which is working fine on the 98 machine. If so, how do I go about it? Thanks, Jerry Taylor

You cannot get rid of the PSCRIPT5.DLL driver on the XP machine and substitute the ADOBEPS4.DRV driver. Windows'9x/Me and Windows 2000/XP are totally different architectures when it comes to drivers. The drivers for Windows'9x/Me simply just don't work at all on the newer systems. In terms of a terminating CTRL-D (binary 4) character on output, that is controlled by the printer properties parameters. It is by default on and if it is currently off on your system, it is easy to reset via the printer properties. You should note that Corel products generate their own PostScript and simply use the PostScript driver as a means of routing the PostScript to the device plus for insertion of device-dependent paper-handling features. Check your versions of such products. Some of the older versions of them had some serious compatibility problems with Windows 2000 and XP. Newer versions allegedly work OK with Windows 2000 and XP. You might want to contact Corel's Technical Support folks about this for complete details. - Dov

Jerry, You cannot do what you want the print engine under Windows 98 is completely different than the one under Windows 2000 or XP due to the underlying NT technolgy. I'd recommend contacting both HP and Cannon about your problem. XP is the future they need to be compatible with. Mike

You can try this Postscript driver by HP: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/software/lj485en.exe or this by ESP: <http://www.cups.org/windows.php> In both cases you need an INF file in order to install the PPD.

Thank you all for responding. I will try that other driver Susi and let you know how it turns out. Thanks again, Jerry Taylor
