I'll be upgrading my DTP system to WinXP soon. My files use PostScript typefaces, and I print using an HP8500 PostScript printer (real PostScript). Which Adobe Print System should I be using (I have 4.3, 4.4, and 4.5) or should I just use whatever will come with the WinXP package?? I would prefer to keep things simple.

Very important first step! Do NOT under any circumstance do an in-place upgrade of any other version of Windows to Windows XP. This is especially true for Windows'95, '98, Me, and NT 4. Do a clean install to a newly formatted partition after backing up data. You will then need to reinstall any applications, fonts, etc. Under Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, one uses the standard PostScript driver that comes with the operating system. It is roughly equivalent to AdobePS 5.2 under Windows NT 4. None of the AdobePS 4.x drivers architecturally work at all under Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003. You can download and run the Adobe Universal PostScript Driver Installer 1.0.6 from Adobe's web site. This allows you to associate arbitrary PPD files (such as the one you have for HP 8500) with the standard Windows PSCRIPT5.DLL driver in a convenient manner. Given that the HP 8500 was released over five years ago, I would avoid even trying to install any software that came with it. All such software preceeded Windows 2000 and XP by two years or more and could muck up your system. - Dov

Thanks for the "clean install" reminder and for the info on the print systems.
