Having trouble installing "winsteng.exe"

Hi

I am trying to install the Postcript Driver so that I can give files to my Print company...When running "winsteng.exe" (provided to me by my print company along with their printer info), I always get the error - InstallShield Engine has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. - I have tried closing all programs, using different drives, running anti virus, etc..and always get the same response..

Just purchased my HP in September (HP Pavillion a262n; 1gig RAM; 160Gig HD...)

Any thoughts?

Brian

What version is this 'winsteng.exe'? Wnat OS are you running?
Did you try downloading this from Adobe instead of trying the one your printer provided?

George

Brian,

the driver at this link should work for you. It's a 7.4MB file dated 5/23/2002

 <http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=1500>

Having administrator access rights you should have no problem installing and running it

thanks
George

Brian,

another way is to install a postscript printer using the Windows postscript driver (instead of the Adobe one) and the appropriate PPD. Can you give it a try?

thanks
George

I'm also having a problem with winsteng.exe. I downloaded it from the link you gave and ran it. I selected a local printer, FILE port, and used the Adobe PPD file.

After I get all the way through and click "Install". The following messages appear:

System Error 126. Unable to load string.
System Error: 1797 The printer driver is unknown.

I've googled for a solution, with no luck.
Any ideas?

PS: If the Windows PostScript Driver is the answer, how would I install a new printer using this driver?

I ended up using the XP Postscript for my problems and things seemed to work fine. Was never able to load the Adobe PS....

I'm willing to give that method a try, but I'm unsure how to get the XP Postscript printer installed.

Do I go to Printers and dbl-click New Printer? If so, what printer make/model do I choose from the list? Or to I choose "Have Disk", and if so, where do I locate the INF file?

I need a little more hand-holding.

Same way as the others, which is indeed...

Choose the printer you actually have. If you can't do that for some
reason, what is the purpose of the driver in your workflow?

You can take this INF after modifying the lines with the PPD:

############### begin ###############
; printer.inf
;

[Version]
Signature="$Windows NT$"
Class=Printer
Provider=%MS%

; The Manufacturer sections lists all of the manufacturers
; that we willdisplay in the Dialog box

[Manufacturer]
"My Manufacturer"

; Model sections. Each section here corresponds with an entry listed in the
; [Manufacturer] section, above. The models will be displayed in the order
; that they appear in the INF file.

[My Manufacturer]
;!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
;replace it by *ModelName (within the PPD) and the PPD name
"My printer" = printer.ppd

;
; Installer Sections
;!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
;replace My printer by *Modelname and printer.ppd by your PPD name
[My printer]
CopyFiles=@printer.ppd,PSCRIPT_NT
DataFile=printer.ppd
DataSection=PSCRIPT_DATA_NT

;
; Data Sections
;
[PSCRIPT_DATA_NT]
DriverFile=PSCRIPT5.DLL
HelpFile=PSCRIPT.HLP
ConfigFile=PS5UI.DLL

The effect I'm trying to achieve is that "Adobe Distiller" will be a "printer" in the "select printer" dialog that comes up when I print from most applications. By selecting "Adobe Distiller" as my printer, the output will go to a PDF document, never having involved an actually physical printer at all.

Doesn't installing Acrobat do that?

Thanks for the help, Susi, but I'm afraid it didn't work. I tried to create a new printer. I chose "have disk" and selected the INF file I created from your post. I choose "FILE" as my port and "Don't share". When I click finish, I get the message:

Printer driver was not installed. Operation could not be completed.

Here's the INF file, with my changes:

#############BEGIN#############
; printer.inf
;

[Version]
Signature="$Windows NT$"
Class=Printer
Provider=%MS%

; The Manufacturer sections lists all of the manufacturers
; that we willdisplay in the Dialog box

[Manufacturer]
"My Manufacturer"

; Model sections. Each section here corresponds with an entry listed in the
; [Manufacturer] section, above. The models will be displayed in the order
; that they appear in the INF file.

[My Manufacturer]
;!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
;replace it by *ModelName (within the PPD) and the PPD name
"Acrobat Distiller" = ADIST5.PPD

;
; Installer Sections
;!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
;replace My printer by *Modelname and printer.ppd by your PPD name
[Acrobat Distiller]
CopyFiles=@ADIST5.ppd,PSCRIPT_NT
DataFile=ADIST5.ppd
DataSection=PSCRIPT_DATA_NT

;
; Data Sections
;
[PSCRIPT_DATA_NT]
DriverFile=PSCRIPT5.DLL
;HelpFile=PSCRIPT.HLP
ConfigFile=PS5UI.DLL

;
; Copy Sections
;
[PSCRIPT_NT]
PSCRIPT5.DLL
;PSCRIPT.HLP
PS5UI.DLL

[DestinationDirs]
DefaultDestDir=66000

[Strings]
MS="Microsoft"
##############END################

After I got this error the first time, I located PSCRIPT5.DLL and PS5UI.DLL and put them in the same directory as the PPD and INF file. I still get the same result.

Any other ideas? See any problems with what I did?

Terry, we don't seem to have established whether your Windows XP is
actually broken here. Add Printer - does it work or not?? Just pick
a PostScript printer (e.g. Apple LaserWriter IINTX) to test. No point
working on PPDs if that is broken.

Yes, my HP4100DTN Laser Printer works fine. I can print from several different applications.

You mentioned that installing Acrobat should set up Distiller for me. Do you mean Acrobat Reader, or the full non-free version?

Ok, is that definitely a PostScript driver (not just a PostScript
compatible printer)? If you print a test page, does it mention
PSCRIPT5, and did you install that from ADD PRINTER?

I mean the commercial product - the one which includes Distiller.

The test page from my printer, states it only uses HP driver files.
(HPBF042G.DLL)

As for Distiller, well, that might be the show-stopper right there. I don't own any commercial versions of Adobe software. I only have the free Acrobat Reader, winsteng.exe and the PPD file.

Is it possible to create a "to PDF file" printer using only freely available Adobe components?

Then that is not a valid test, as you are not installing the same
driver. Try to install the Apple LaserWriter IINT.
>

Absolutely not. You need Distiller, included with Acrobat Standard,
Acrobat Professional, and some other products. Although on some
systems you will see a "print to PDF" printer, these systems are set
up to automatically run Distiller after writing a PostScript file.

Well, thanks anyway for your help and patience. I'll see if my employer is willing to shell out the $300US for Standard.

If not, there are a lot of free alternatives for PDF production.
The quality however varies and editing of PDFs with other programs
than Acrobat is in most cases, free or commercial, unsatisfactory.

But if you want only make PDF files of text look e.g. for FreePDF.
If you speak German a good entry is rumborak.de.
If you are looking for PDF production from MS Word look for Ghostword.

There are also solutions with CUPS as a server for Windows clients.
