Hi Guys I need to be able to test whether a particular printer vendors Postcript 3 interpreter is truly compatible under Windows. I realise I can purchase a series of test suites but these are horrendously expensive considering my modest budget. Can anyone shed some light on where to source test scripts or documents? We are willing to pay for assistance with this one. Regards, Steve

PostScript test suites are many thousands of dollars, but generally only printer manufacturers would only ever run them. What is it that you are really trying to find out? You say "compatible under windows", but surely a quick test will tell you whether you can print to it? Aandi Inston

Yes, commercially-available PostScript 3 Test Suites are very expensive. And I can assure you that those that are commercially available are not robust enough to properly diagnose problems with PostScript 3 emulations. That might indicate why many printers using such emulations on the marketplace today do so miserably with PostScript generated by modern applications such as InDesign and Acrobat. Adobe's own PostScript validation suite and tools (which are not available for public use) were literally the result of millions of dollars in investment over the years. And they also require significant knowledge and training for proper use. Don't expect to find some cheap file or script that will give you an instant analysis of the validity of whatever device/RIP you are testing. - Dov

Hi Guys I guess a short description of my problem will explain a lot. My department is going to purchase a considerable number of Printer A and one of the competing vendors have claimed that their printer is superior because Printer A does not have a "fully compatible" implementation of PS3 and theirs does. We are exclusively using Windows based PC's. Now this info has worked its way up to the top level managers who are concerned that this may be true and have now asked me to confirm whether this is true or not. They are not going to be convinced by me simply printing a page using the PS3 driver and are definitely no going to OK me spending US$20k on a commercial PS3 test suite. So I'm stuck. I have to supply them with "reasonable" proof that the printer A is PS3 compatible because any small glitch with a print task down the line after we purchase the printer will result in my butt suffering a severe kicking. Hence my dilemma. Steve

Sorry, but a $20,000 test suite is not going to tell you squat! The most widely-used tests of this type are from QualityLogic. Their test suites (formerly the "Genoa Test Suites") are used by most of the printer companies. But plenty of printers "passing" those tests fail when dealing with sophisticated output from newer, graphic intensive applications, including Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, and Illustrator. Generally speaking, if the printer you are purchasing has Adobe PostScript 3, not emulation of PostScript, you at least have Adobe's assurances with regards to conformance to the PostScript language specification. For example, most but not all of the Xerox Phaser printers license and use Adobe PostScript 3 (the Phaser 3450 is the one that doesn't). All Xante printers use Adobe PostScript 3. NO current Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printer and NO current Lexmark printers use Adobe PostScript! - Dov

Thanks Dov This is very useful information particularly in light of the fact that one of the vendors you have stated does NOT license Adobe PS3 is complaining that the other vendors product is not truly PS3 compatible. Regards, Steve

If you are dealing with a sales person making these claims - why not ask them for a test job which their rival will fail? If they can't provide one, draw your own conclusions. Aandi Inston
