Changing the printer name during installation

I'm successfully using the generic posrtscript printer driver to print to a applewriter 12/640. However I cannot change the name of the driver during the install (such that in the printers & faxes folder, the printers are called something more useful than 'generic postscript printer'). During install one of the boxes says to type in the name you would like, however this is greyed out. Selecting the printer & pressing F2 & changing the name gives the error 'operation could not be completed.'

I need to do this because each machine can print to several printers - all the same model. Obviously it is useful to know which printer you are printing to!!

I am using the default ppd file - if it makes a difference, can anyone tell me how to change the ppd being used? I tried using the windows-provided driver for this printer, however after every job the printer hung & required powercycling to clear the job!

You can edit the "*NickName:" line in the PPD file before installing. You might want to change the name of the PPD file too.

Make copies of the PPD and change the name within the PPD each time it
occurs, with a text editor.

generic posrtscript printer is always a bad choice. You better take
the PPD that belongs to yoer printer. Download it from Apple.

OK - thanks for the replies. How do I change the PPD before installing? For that matter, how do I change the PPD that the driver uses at all? I am just double-clicking the winsteng.exe file to install, and there is no point during the install where it asks me which ppd file to use.

At the fivth click there must be the question for the
printer model. At that time the PPD must be on hand.
Point to the folder where the file is.

Ah - I always knew I was blind! Well, that's the loading of custom ppd's sorted. The problem now is that if I use the ppd found in apples win95 driver (the newest one that I can find) the printer prints fine, but the job never clears from the queue - it remains stuck there, preventing any further printing until I powercycle the printer twice. This is the same error I found when using the default windows XP driver for this printer. Anyone any ideas where to start looking for the problem, or am I going to have to go through the ppd comparing it line by line with the generic postscript one until I find it :(

I assume WinXP contains the newest PPD for that printer.
Go to c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86
there or in .\2 or .\3 should be the PPD. Compare the version
number.

the Apple name is APLWMGS1.PPD version 1.1

It can also be an error in the printer.

Download the NT package from Apple.

There were files with that name in both the w32x86 & the w32x86\3 folders. With the exception of some formatting, the only difference was that the one in the w32x86 directory contained an extra line in the FreeVM section saying:
* LandscapeOrientation: Minus90 The one in the w32x86 directory was edited more recently (1997 as opposed to 1996) but other than that there were no differences. Since the problem occurd with both ppds, I assume these changes make no difference, I therefore doubt that anything would be any different in the NT driver ppd although I will check it. Any more thoughts?

Printing a test page will tell you which PPD is in use.

I know which ppd is in use. The problem is that with the 'official' ppd the printer hangs after every job. With the generic ppd it's fine, but then I don't have access to the printers advanced settings :(

In any case the Generic PPD is the worst solution. I would try
a PPD from a newer printer with similiar properties. Maybe from
another manufacturer.

On this site you can test the PPDs on conformity with Adobe's
specifications:
 <http://cups.org/testppd.php>
You can find the reference manual e. g. here:
ftp://ftp.lprng.com/pub/LPRng/RESOURCES/ADOBE/5003.PPD_Spec_v4.3.pdf

The version 1.1 of the PPD is here:
 <http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/DOS-Windows/Printing/LaserWriter_for_Windows_NT/LWNT_10.ZIP>

Maybe you could edit thr PPD manually.
