Hi, can anyone help me with where I can get a ppd file for my HP laserjet 4M plus printer. I am new at this postscript stuff and I believe that if I install the AdobePS driver I need a ppd file. I am also curious to understand what the Adobe PS driver does and why the printer from my list of printers is not also ok ? As I said am pretty new at this stuff, and actually very confused!
Thanks I really would appreciate any help on this.
Warm regards
Connie

Your understanding of needing PPD if you use AdobePS is correct.
But...

You don't need to install the Adobe PS driver. Windows already has a
PostScript driver for your printer. Just use the Add Printer icon, but
select the "HP Laserjet 4/4M Plus 600" printer, which is PostScript -
not the "HP Laserjet 4 Plus" or "HP Laserjet 4M Plus" which is not
PostScript.

As to why "why the printer from my list of printers is not also ok ?"

That depends. For what purpose isn't it ok?

Hi Aandi, and thanks you so very much !!
I think I've got the info in my head, I'm just getting confused as to why I need the Adobe PS driver - would this be only if I am creating PDF's and then I would need to use the distiller PPD ?
One more question, please with my HP 4M - what PPD do I use and where would I get it? ie when I'm trying to print out of Freehand or another application, do I need to tick the box "use PPD"?

The reason I thought that my printer from my list wasn't ok, is that I was told to use the Adobe PS, so for some reason I thought it was a better postcript driver.

Thanks and have a great day!

There is no such creature as an "AdobePS driver for Windows XP." All that Adobe does provide is an installer that lets you associate a printer's PPD file with the standard Windows XP (or Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003) PostScript driver.

For creating PDFs - if Acrobat is installed, it will install a driver
for you. Use that.

If you don't have Acrobat, then use the AdobePS installer (which
doesn't install AdobePS, as Dov says, but don't worry about that) with
the Distiller PPD.

If, on the other hand, you want to print TO YOUR PRINTER from
Freehand, and need a PPD, do a search of your hard disk for *.PPD. You
might find that you already have it, because of the ADD PRINTER
install you (I assume) just did.
