Universal PS Driver question
#562

I just upgraded a machine to Win2K Pro and am using the Adobe Universal PS Driver downloaded from Adobe. I've discovered that when I send separations from an application (Quark, for instance) I get four individual grayscale separation pages on my Agfa PDF RIP Preview. Is this normal? Can it be changed?

I think it is counterproductive because I cannot check trapping on Preview.

Thanks,

George

Quark XPress generates all its own PostScript. The driver just serves as a conduit for that PostScript to reach the device. This is not a PostScript driver issue.

Normally, you would NEVER create pre-separated PDF. Separations would be performed in your Agfa RIP. If you do generate pre-separated PDF, what you see is normal.

I'm not sure what you would expect to happen instead? That's what
printed separations are - four (or so) greyscale pages.

Some RIPs are able to recombine separations, but that's a RIP
function, it's not something connected to the printer driver.

Dov: I'm not working with PDF files. Ninety-plus percent of output is from the original app files.

Aandi: What I expect is what's been happening for years under Win98 and an earlier version of the AdobePS driver: on the Preview Server, I would get four combined plates *in color* enabling me to closely check trapping, etc. Under Win2K this does not happen unless I do In-RIP seps which in many cases isn't feasible due to the wide use of spot colors. Agfa hasn't provided an XT since Quark 4.x which allows In-RIP sep plates of spot colors although "it's going to be available any day now". Sure it is.

Still, the issue is that ALL PostScript for a QuarkXPress document comes from QuarkXPress itself. The driver is totally irrelevant to the process other than as a conduit of the PostScript from the program to the queue or file.

Ok, that must mean that your RIP had some code to recombine plates,
but was very fussy about the PostScript. Contact the RIP maker to see
if they have an update for modern systems. Unless that's Agfa and you
say you've already tried.

The PS driver isn't at fault if it makes something that still prints
correctly. Windows 2000/XP printer drivers have to be written in a
completely different way to those in Windows 9x, so the files produced
are typically very different inside.
