Our HP LaserJet 4500 is on its last legs and our service guy (who I am not sure knows what he is talking about!) is trying to convince us to buy an OKI C9300 or C9500 to replace it. I've been looking at the HP LaserJet 5500dn. I would appreciate any suggestions. Though we want a fast printer, I am concerned about sacrificing color quality for speed.

We do use an EPSON Stylus Photo 2200 for high quality covers and photo prints, but we rely heavily on the LaserJet for printing out proposals which contain lots of text and photos.

We mainly use Pagemaker 7.0, Photoshop 7, Illustrator 10; I am using InDesign as often as I can(and trying to persuade others to switch over), but I mainly print InDesign docs with the Espon. And we use PC's with Windows 2000.

I'm a fan of Kyocera. But I don't like to convice you.
You get what you pay for. That rule is ever true.
If you pay more you get a printer that is reliable

Money is not the prime issue here. I think I can convince my boss to spend a little more for a reliable printer. I just want to be sure the quality is as good as the speed and, of course, reliabilty. The problem with this small town I live in is that the vendors just want to sell an efficient printer and don't really understand a graphic designer's perspective.

I know nothing about Kyocera, but will investigate. Thanks!

Hello!
I own an OKI 9500 HDN since two weeks...
too short to tell you long time experiences, but:
you get a lot for your money (built-in ram, good support with drivers...)
today I printed a page which was former printed in 4c offset, my sister (the
greatest test person ;-)))
was impressed about the quality and we can't nearly see a difference between
the two prints!!!
I have now to print 1000 DIN A4 4c business flyers on this shining printing
paper (don't know the exact
english name)
I also printed business cards 4c on 250g cardstock (also this shining paper)
GREAT!!!!!
I have to say: as a business offset printer with 20 years of experience with
printing
I started with "real" printing on a HEIDELBERGER Tiegel and typesetting
with HAND ;-))
I can only say: "WOW" thats the deal
printing small amout of 4c so easy it's near a dream to me ;-)))
if you want a can mail you tests about this printer (only in german)
I hope I helped you a bit......
TOM

Kyocera builds printers for yery long time.
All printers now sold understand Postscript.
That is important if you use a print server
that resides on UNIX. (www.cups.org)

Bad examples are Ricoh and Minolta where
Postscript is only an option.

To test the printers you could send PDFs to
the vendors and please them to make printouts.

If a printer is 5000+ $ worth I would expect
that the vendor is open hearted to your needs.

Yes, I will definitely request the printout. I looked up Kyocera FS8008 and the FS-C5016N and the specifications do rival Hp, but I am a bit surprised by the slow color output (8 ppm) of the FS8008 and the limited paper format (legal) of the FS-C5016N.

What do you usually use the printer for? Do you usually print color or monochrome?

Unfortunatly I don't have any experiences with color lasers.
They always say that the quality of ink jets is better.
I have worked with a FS-7000. 4 years ago it was the top
model of Kyocera. It happend that someone has tried to print
on a oberhead film that was only suitable to write by hand.
It melted but I could remove the rests of it the printer
was ok. I would not suggest such things with desktop printers
like HP 1200 or similiar. That is what I mean with: You get
what you pay for.

Usually I print monochrome.

Take a look at <http://www.linuxprinting.org> and read comments.
Or google for those. It will help.

Very cheap printers are never reliable. Often Windows-only.
Xerox has an cheap (under 1000$) color printer with PS level 3.
But I have only seen the advertisements.

Kyocera printer contain expusure units that are only
changed after the 10th or so toner catridge. So the
price for each printed page is very low. But the change
of the exposure unit will be expensive.

You want to print in color. So PS Level 3 is important.
Also important is memory. Depending on the size of the
grafics 256 MB and more is good.
Formerly you could put PS/2 memory modules in Kyocera printers.
Now they have an other standard. For the FS-1010 the
128 MB module is about 300 $. I think there is a lot of
space for negotiation.
