I have Powerpoint presentations, fairly simple, mostly text and simple graphics created with ppt's drawing tools on program's default templates, maybe some simple clipart included, files size usually etween 100 and 400 Kb. When I print these presentations to pdf with distiller printer driver (in orger to deliver lecture handouts through internet), I get pdfs that are about five times the original ppt-filesize, very slow (if not impossible) to download/open by students, and sometimes impossible to print (or printing takes half a day...). I've been having this problems since the recent update into Win XP from NT4. I also tried printing first to file, then open the printer file with Distiller to produce pdfs. The file sizes dropped to double (from above mentioned 5 times) compared with original ptt-files, but they are still too large. Any quick fixes to this problem? Tiina

Depending upon the version of PowerPoint you are using, gradients and images with transparent backgrounds result in PowerPoint going crazy with calls to the PostScript printer driver with one and two pixel wide images to "fake" certain graphical constructs. The same thing happens, by the way, when to try to print such presentations to "live" printers as opposed to creating PDF. Complain to Microsoft! - Dov

Do you have backgrounds in the slides? Each slide with the same background will be stored multiple times in the PDF (even when it is possible to store it once and reference it multiple times). The printer driver is not aware of this and will produce huge output like PostScript or PDF. Storing the background in lower quality might solve your problem.
