Installation in a printer server

Hi!

The executable installation wizard of the installation is so pretty... but I need the .inf files in order to install the drivers in a Printer Server.

Any help?

My problem is that I have a Samba Server with CUPS with a Postscript -> HP840C filter installed. I need that because HP840C driver cannot be used correctly storing the preferences in a Samba services. So I chosed to let cups process a postscript file sent by the Windows boxes.
How can I send a Color 600dpi postscript to the printer? That's why I've thought about using your drivers... so if you have any other suggestion (maybe a ps printer driver included in win2k server?)

Thanks!!!

Sorry, I see that now. The AdobePS installer installs the identical
driver to Microsoft's own (more or less). Just use the ADD PRINTER
icon to add your driver, or find the underlying INF file that ADD
PRINTER would use.

Mmmm I cannot use the 'add printer' icon because I can ONLY download an installation executable.
There is no way I can get the inf file.
I've tried installing from /winnt/temp/... files (the ones the installer unpacks), but Win2k complains about the inf file found there (I simply cannot select it).

Sorry, don't understand. Why not?

Again, why not?

The Adobe PostScript driver doesn't make an INF file, and if you want
an INF file it will be no use to you.

Forget the AdobePS driver. Use the INF files Microsoft provide for
PostScript. It is the same code in either case; AdobePS is just a
convenient way of installing the driver program with a PPD without
needing an INF; since it does not need an INF it is no use to you!

By the way, why would you want to install the "Generic" printer
driver? There is always a better one.

Oh, ok. Thanks.
But I chose the Adobe PS drivers because I don't know where to find the Microsoft generic PS ones... Where can I get them??

I need to print to a 'ghostscript'. I need color, and 600dpi. What do you suggest? I have no idea about what's the best.

Thanks!

Mmm anyway, someone may need that kind of driver available in a printer server (also, of course, acting as a printer driver server). So you told me that Adobe drivers cannot do that.

I think the Adobe driver should be able to be installed from a INF file (and then act processing PPDs, when it is installed).

Mmm and maybe there are better ways of doing that: the server should also hold the PPDs to use with each printer. Dunno... but I mean that right now the printers only allow workstation installation.

Anyway, I don't need that (by now!). :)

There isn't a generic Microsoft driver. But you also can't buy a
printer called "Generic".

Well, the Generic driver is black and white, and 300 dpi: not much of
a choice. I'm disappointed the GhostScript community hasn't produced
a customized driver, but they don't seem to have. The resolution is
probably unimportant, PostScript is resolution independent. Try one of
the Tektronix Phaser models, all are colour PostScript.

Maybe I'm missing the point. On Windows 2000 the Adobe driver is the
SAME SOFTWARE as the Microsoft Driver. It's just a different
installer, which allows you to choose a PPD.

So, given that the only difference is the installer, if you want
something to be installed from an INF file, then use Microsoft's INF
based package, rather than Adobe's which exists ONLY to get away from
INF files.

Clearly someone could create an INF file that referred to the generic
PPD. This is possible, but hard work. Why would they do it for the
essentially useless Generic driver... it would only encourage more
people to install this worthless item (do you get the impression I
don't like it...?)

Mmm ok. :)
I'm also missing some point; forget that thing about INF. :)
I have a ghostscript in a server, which translates the PS input from Samba to a Coloured 600dpi HP Deskjet. Windows must send the printed data in Postscript, so ghostscript can translate it.
Which driver can I use in the Windows box? I need a driver that could be installed into a remote printer driver server (i.e. I need a INF file or the driver must come with Windows 2000 CD).

What do you suggest? I want that config (with the gs filter in the middle). I've tried some Apple LaserWriter driver, and it works but in Grayscale (a grayscale Postscript is generated, because that Laserwriter is B/W.
Then... any help?
Thanks for the attention. :)

I'd suggest first you check if the GhostScript project has created a
PPD and INF file. If it has not, use a Tektronix Phaser.

I believe the AdobePS installer is just a red herring here. In fact,
if it really was the Adobe PostScript driver, rather than Microsoft's
driver, the license would forbid using it with GhostScript. That still
applies to Windows 9x systems.

You can find your PPD here in the database:

 <http://www.linuxprinting.org/database.html>

If you want to install the PPD from command line download a PPD archive for a postscript printer from the manufacturer, e. g. HP5Si.
Replace the PPD entries by yours.

Look here how to install:

Note that this process only creates a printer driver instance with default settings. Such default settings may or may not actually work in one's particular network environment!

You are right. The example given has to be adjusted.

rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /if /b "HP DeskJet 970Cxi" /f %windir%\inf\ntprint.inf /r "lpt1:" /m "HP DeskJet 970Cxi"

The port here must be replaced by

"\\server\printer"

or

"IP_192.168.1.1"

or what ever the needs are.
