I have just installed a laserjet 4600 and have never had any problems with color and jpg's, etc. However, when I print what I see on the illustrator screen, the hplj 4600 is printing something not quite right.

Is there another driver or setting I should be using ? I noticed that HP has a Pantone software available but I am not able to view the page via illustrator.

Are you using colour management, with a calibrated screen? If not,
then it is too much to expect a printer to match.
