Symptom: particular typeface won't print to HP 8100 network laserjet printer - page is blank where font is used. But only in specific applications, and only using the HP 8100 driver. Other postscript drivers work, and can print correctly to this printer. Other applications work, and can print using the HP 8100 driver. Specifics: Windows 2000, typeface Interstate from Font Bureau, HP 8100 printer using Postscript Printer Driver Ver. 5.2 (5.1.2600.116)PPD: AdobePS HP - HP8100_4.- PPD version 2.0. Testing: -- The fonts themselves are OK. They display and print correctly in the Fonts folder in the control panel, display correctly on screen, and work properly under Win98 (both systems are linked to the same font files). Plus they work in other applications. I have reinstalled them just in case. -- We can print using the HP 8100 PS driver with Corel Ventura 8, 10, and Adobe Illustrator. Using that same driver, the fonts will not print with Frame 5.5.3, Word 97, and Word 2000. -- I went do a different workstation. Same results. So it's not workstation settings. -- I created a variety of files from scratch for testing. Same results. So it's not the document. -- We can print using the Adobe Distiller PS driver and make a good PDF file, and we can print with the Agfa PS driver connected to the HP 8100 printer from all applications. So it's isolated to the HP 8100 driver. -- If we print to file from Word and Frame, then try to distill that file, it will not distill. The Postscript error message is "syntaxerror; offending command" The Adobe Distiller 5.0 driver works fine, and creates postscript that is distilled from the same applications without problem. -- The problem is specific to Windows 2000. All applications print correctly using the same file in Windows 98. Any ideas? -- Nancy

Well, maybe the fonts aren't quite right. Exactly what fonts are they? There are a number of third party symbol fonts in Type 1 format that appear to be incompatible with the Windows 2000/XP/2003 Server PostScript driver. Often, TrueType or OpenType versions of the same font have no problem. By the way, you cannot simply take PostScript files generated for a particular printer model and feed them to the Distiller. PostScript is device dependent and the PostScript generated for your LaserJet 8100 CloneScript printer has various binary escape sequences plus possibly other commands that are incompatible with pure binary devices such as the Distiller. - Dov
