We are currently creating postscript files from Quark on the Windows 2000 Professional platform. We use the postscript files to create PDF's in Distiller. The process of creating a postscript file is taking too long. We recently created a postscript file from Quark (size of Quark file = 3.931 Meg.) It took 102 minutes to create the postscript file (postscript file size was 321 Meg.). Is this normal????? Glenn Houck Print Production Manager Tripp Lite

Well, Quark XPress generates its own PostScript using the Windows PostScript driver simply as a conduit to put the resultant PostScript either into a file or onto the print queue. Is 321 megabytes excessive for a 3.9 megabyte source file? Maybe or maybe not. If you are referencing a large number of fonts or have many graphics (and perhaps highly compressed but high-resolution JPEG images amongst them) placed by reference into that document, then 321 megabytes might not really be all that big. You didn't describe exactly how you are producing the PostScript files (i.e., are you printing to the Acrobat Distiller or Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance for Acrobat 5 or 6 respectively or to some other driver instance). However, if the PostScript driver is set to print directly to printer and not to one of the spool options (even if just printing to file), PostScript generation times will be dramatically longer. If this doesn't solve your problem you might want to contact Quark Technical Support given that their application is actually generating the PostScript in question. - Dov

Does your Quark file contain or reference TIFF files of depth 1? Quark (I haven't tested the most recent versio yet) used to convert such images to myriads of puzzle pieces made of some weird type 3 font. That could explain the size of the PS file and the time it takes to create it.
