I "stumbled" on this while browsing for an answer to my problem. It is common knowledge (whether correct or not I don't know) that having both TT and T1 versions of font files causes problems, especially for users of Corel programs. This seems to conflict with your message quoted below.
Can you tell me more about how TT Symbols affects the "secret sauce" <-nice term! of Win98SE, or perhaps point me to a source of more information??
I've always been very diligent about my use of TT/T1 fonts to keep conflicts to a minimum.
TIA

By chance, did you remove the TrueType "Symbol" font? That particular font is installed with the operating system and is part of the "secret sauce" of Windows. Delete it and you have problems. If you did delete it, restore it and your problems should "go away."

The Symbol font under Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003 is the exception to the rule that you must never have two fonts with the same font name. That's just the way it is, for better or worse. Note that for Windows'9x/Me, you must not have both flavours of Symbol either! - Dov
