Help on PostScript Format

Where can I find the explanation of the various formats in the Postscript options (Portability, Speed, Archive...)?
I found that using Portability I have the following string in the PS file (from FrameMaker on Win2k, Linotronic330): "%%BeginFeature: *PageSize A4". This string is not present if I print with Archive format. But Distiller can distill the second file, but not the first (the portability format gives an offendig command)...

The Linotronic330 PPD you use probably is the old version 52.x one, which describes a level 1 device. That uses legacy operators to set the page size which distiller does not know about.

You should use this old Linotronic PPD if and only if you have a Linotronic330 with a RIP 30 or RIP 40
(or earlier) attached.

Does it depend from Windows 2000?
In Windows 95/98 there is a "Portability (ADSC)" option that works great with distiller and that deseappear in Windows 2000...

The portability option should be irrelevant to the Distiller. That option was provided to two purposes:

(1) To get around ill-behaved applications that made assumptions about how the driver created PostScript and used GDI escape sequences to insert PostScript into the output stream. Example: FrameMaker versions prior to 5.1.

(2) To create PostScript that is semi page-independent to accommodate certain PostScript preprocessing applications that do not actually process PostScript.

This option is fairly useless for virtually all modern day applications and RIPs. It is totally irrelevant to distilling PostScript to create PDF.

This option is fairly useless for virtually all ...

but is needed for most imposition applications as they reorder the pages.

Such imposition applications are fairly brain-dead in that they do not generally fully interpret PostScript. They rely on guessing about the file contents based upon DSC which is highly unreliable. One of the great advantages of PDF over PostScript is that the page order dependencies go away. Sending PostScript to prepress service providers is a great way to cause oneself quite a few problems!

I'd have to disagree that time, Dov. If DSC is used *correctly* then
imposition will be 100% accurate, all of the time, without any need to
guess anything. The reason imposition packages are a bit flaky is that
PostScript doesn't really follow DSC very often...

Actually, the problem that we have found is that each PostScript pre-processing program appears to interpret DSC differently and some of them try to do pattern-matching of PostScript to pick up further information with regards to the PostScript file. When you look at the combinations and permutations of what is generated by programs producing EPS imported into mainline publishing programs which add their own DSC and further aggrevated by drivers adding even more DSC.

Since "correctly" generating DSC as well as PostScript is so problematic, PDF provides a much better alternative for prepress added value functionality.

I could only agree that imposing PDF is much superior! It's not
without its problems (for example, patterns and shadings may be
relative to the page origin, so simple shifting PDF contents on a
sheet can produce incorrect results).

I have a Lino 330 with 50 RIP and can not get it to print from the PC, which has Windows XP - I understand that the Windows may have an updated drive that will work. Can anyone confirm and tell me where to get it or how to workaround this problem. Thanks

Print to file and post an URL to that sample file. I'll have a look into it.
